Defending champion University of the Philippines kicks off its bid to retain the men's basketball title against Final Four rival De La Salle on the opening day of the UAAP Season 85 on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Tipoff is set at 4:00 p.m. as the Fighting Maroons bank on Carl Tamayo, Finals MVP Malick Diouf together with Zavier Lucero and JD Cagulangan to make up for their key losses in Ricci Rivero, Noah Webb and the injured CJ Cansino.
On the other end, De La Salle is looking confident despite missing their prized big man Justine Baltazar. Evan Nelle, who saw their hard work come to fruition in the offseason, is confident of their chances against the tournament's favorites.
The Green Archers had a promising short offseason after their 2022 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup championship and 2022 Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup third-place finish.
“I really think we’re the favorites because we bonded. The way our preseason games concluded, we really showed what we can do as a team,” said Nelle.
DLSU head coach Derrick Pumaren will capitalize on their promising off-season.
“Of course, they are coming in as the defending champion. They have a different confidence level, sa amin, above compared coming into the bubble tournament. But I can guarantee that we will just play hard, work hard, and compete to get a better chance of winning the ball game,” said Pumaren.
After their historic run, UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde will not be swayed by early pressure with their collegiate rivals breathing down their necks.
“Right now, we’re really preparing for them and La Salle’s a very good team. Gano’n naman kami every time we go to a (new) season, we just take it as anong dumating and face the challenge,” said Monteverde.
Meanwhile, host school Adamson will begin their campaign against UST after the pre-recorded ceremony at 2:00 p.m., with head coach Nash Racela still calling the shots for the Soaring Falcons for the second year.
Even with a rebuilding lineup, the Growling Tigers, including their new head coach Bal David, are still confident that they can surprise their rivals after a disappointing seventh-place finish earlier this year and missing two key players in Sherwin Concepcion and Bryan Santos who were ruled ineligible due to age.
After missing the shortened Season 84, the women’s 5-on-5 tournament returns to action with the 8:00 a.m. tipoff between the Adamson Lady Falcons and the UST Growling Tigresses.
The matchup will be followed by the UP Lady Maroons and the De La Salle Lady Archers at 10:00 a.m.
