DPWH completes P122.8-M slope projects to ensure safe travel to Boracay

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed constructing two rockslide protection projects on landslide-prone highways in Aklan, which are used as the main artery to reach tourist destinations such as the famous island of Boracay.

Both projects built along Aklan West Road in Barangay Libertad involved the construction of high-tensile mesh wire slope protection with erosion control mats and hydro-seeding, the DPWH said.

DPWH Region 6 Director Nerie D. Bueno said the two completed slope protection projects now ensure safer travels for motorists traversing the landslide-prone national highway in Nabas, Aklan.

Implemented by DPWH Aklan District Engineering Office, the 3,915-square meter project was built for P66.1 million while the other rock-fall barrier measuring 84.5-meter high and 48.5-meter expansive cost P56.7 million.

“DPWH Region 6 will continue to work on more projects that will protect people’s lives and properties through appropriate and necessary engineering intervention,” said Bueno.

With the completion of the anti-rockslide projects, locals and visitors commonly traveling along the landslide-prone area are now protected from cascading debris, providing safer and more convenient access to Boracay Island, the DPWH noted.
