Magnitude 4.2 quake jolts Occidental Mindoro

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a 4.2-magnitude earthquake in Occidental Mindoro on Thursday evening, Oct. 6.

Phivolcs said the quake struck 18 kilometers (km) northwest of Paluan, Occidental Mindoro at around 7:02 p.m. on Thursday.

The earthquake was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Paluan, Occidental Mindoro and Intensity III (weak) in Calatagan, Tingloy, San Luis, Mabini, and Santa Teresita in Batangas; Looc and Abra de Ilog in Occidental Mindoro; and Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro.

It was also felt at Intensity II (slightly felt) in Tagaytay City; Batangas City; Tanauan, Taal, Lobo, Laurel, San Nicolas and Bauan, Batangas; San Teodoro and Baco, Oriental Mindoro; and Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.

Talisay, Agoncillo, and Taysan in Batangas; and Baco and Victoria in Oriental Mindoro felt the tremor at Intensity I (scarcely perceptible).

Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the tremor at Intensity III in Calatagan, Batangas; Tagaytay City; and Puerto Galera and Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro; Intensity II in Magallanes, Cavite; and Intensity I in Batangas City; and Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.

It said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, Phivolcs does not expect damage or aftershocks because of this earthquake.
