Mayor Gatchalian reminds students in Valenzuela to use social media responsibly
Valenzuela City Mayor Weslie “Wes” Gatchalian reminded on Tuesday, Oct. 4, the students and residents in the city to be responsible users of social media, and urged parents to guide their children when using the platform.
He issued the reminder after a student posted an inappropriate joke about class suspensions in the comment section of a post on the city government's Facebook page last week.
The local government said that the post where the student commented is about the automatic class suspension guidelines it implemented following the onslaught of super typhoon “Karding” last Sept. 25-26.
According to the city government, the student called on the mayor through the comment section saying "Mayor may pasok or magkakaroon ng funeral service diyan sa tapat ng bahay niyo?” (Mayor, will there be classes or there will be a funeral service in front of your house?)
It said that after the incident, the parents of the student asked for an appointment with the mayor on Tuesday to personally apologize to him.
The school administration has already talked to the student and the parents, and disciplinary actions were taken, it added.
“Maraming mga kabataan ang nagbibitiw ng mga hindi maayos na comments sa aming page kapag nagtatanong kung may pasok o wala, let this be a reminder na maging magalang tayo kahit sa social media. Okay ang magtanong pero huwag nating kalimutang rumespeto (A lot of young people leave inappropriate comments on our page when asking if there are classes, let this be a reminder for us to be respectful even on social media. It's okay to ask but let's not forget to respect),” the city government said.
