BACOLOD CITY -- The local government of Cadiz City in Negros Occidental destroyed 72 defective weighing scales on Tuesday, Oct. 4, in an effort to protect consumers from dishonest market traders.

The weighing scale machines were confiscated by the Market Operations Division Composite Team during a series of surprise inspections at the city public market over a period of four months.
It was part of the city government's drive in response to the recurring complaints from consumers regarding the inaccurate weight measurement of some traded products at the market.
The destruction ceremony was witnessed by Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) officials led by provincial director Rachel Nufable, government employees, and the police.
The activity was also in line with the celebration of the Consumers' Welfare Month.
Mayor Salvador Escalante urged businessmen and traders to stop that practice of altering their weighing scale machines and warned them that the city will continue its monitoring and operation.
