PNP creates task force to probe Percy Lapid killing

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has created a task force to expedite the investigation into the killing of a veteran and outspoken broadcaster in Las Piñas City on Monday night, Oct. 3.

PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin, Jr. said he already tasked the las Piñas City police to spearhead and coordinate the investigative and prosecutorial efforts of the PNP to bring justice to Percy Mabasa, popularly known as Percy Lapid.

"The PNP vows to bring justice to an attack against a member of the media industry. Investigation is underway to determine the culprits and motive of this case," said Azurin.

Lapid is a hard-hitting broadcast journalist known for criticizing abuses of those in power and irregularities in the government.

He was shot dead at around 8:30 p.m. on Monday along Aria Street in Barangay Talon 2 San Beda Homes in Las Piñas City.

Based on the statement of the witnesses, the gunman was on board a motorcycle but was apparently backed by an unidentified man on board a white sports utility vehicle.

Based on the report, the vehicle of Lapid was deliberately bumped by the white SUV from the rear and few seconds later, the gunman on board a motorcycle shot him twice.

Recovered from the assassination site were two spent shell of a gun.

In a statement, the PNP said the initial response done was to search for the CCTVs in the areas in a bid to get a clue of the identification of the suspects.
