The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) activated free Wi-Fi sites in Looc, Occidental Mindoro to address the problem of intermittent signal in the municipality.

"Your DICT commits to continue our intensified efforts to meet the country's increased need for better and more reliable connectivity," DICT Acting Secretary Emmanuel Rey Caintic said.
"As the country gradually reopens, we hope to establish inclusive connectivity to ensure that Filipinos can benefit from the opportunities in the recovering Philippine economy," he added.
Ambil Island in Looc is one of the Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs) barangays which was provided connectivity through DICT's Free Wi-Fi for All.
Due to its remote geographic landscape, the residents had to rely on ingenuity to connect to the Internet.
Residents were known to place their mobile phones on top of bamboo poles to get a connection for school, work, or communication with loved ones. Others had to go uphill or walk to distant shorelines just to acquire connectivity.
In accordance with Republic Act 10929, otherwise known as the “Free Internet Access in Public Places Act”, the DICT covers the installation of free internet access in public places and aims to accelerate the government’s efforts in enhancing Internet accessibility to bridge the growing digital divide.
Public places include plazas, schools, Rural Health Units (RHUs), transport terminals, airports, seaports, hospitals, and community quarantine sites among others.
