Alabang mall releases statement on fire incident

The management of Starmall Alabang has released its statement regarding a fire that hit the shopping mall in Alabang, Muntinlupa on Jan. 8.

Here is the full statement from Starmall Alabang:

“A fire broke out in Starmall Alabang before dawn on January 8, 2022 (Saturday). The Bureau of Fire Protection declared it under control last night.

“While we are saddened by the turn of events, we are thankful also that there were no reported casualties.

“The management is extending its gratitude to the fire brigades and volunteer groups from all over the National Capital Region and nearby areas such as Imus, Bacoor, and Dasmarinas in Cavite for responding to the blaze.

“The courage of our firefighters and volunteers, who tirelessly took turns in putting out the fire, was commendable.

“We also want to thank the local government units for their assistance, and the Philippine National Police personnel, who provided security, as well as private firms such as Maynilad for providing water tanks that were used to help contain the fire.

“We also thank our team for properly coordinating the efforts to address this incident.

“For our tenants, proper coordination will be made to look into your concerns. We appeal for your patience and understanding as we wait for the results of the BFP investigation.

“For our loyal customers, we vow to rise above this adversity and come out stronger than ever to be able to serve you better. Thank you.”

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Muntinlupa raised the first alarm for the fire at 3:40 a.m. on Jan. 8 followed by a second alarm at 4:03 a.m. and third at 4:49 a.m. The fifth alarm was raised at 7:13 a.m. followed by Task Force Alpha at 7:46 a.m.

Firefighters declared the fire under control at 7:06 p.m. on Jan. 8. As of the morning of Jan. 9, firefighters were still doing an “overhauling” wherein they were thoroughly checking the mall for hidden and remaining fires.

Muntinlupa Fire Director Supt. Roberto Samillano Jr. declared "fire out" for the Starmall Alabang fire at 12:21 p.m. on Jan. 9.

According to BFP-Muntinlupa’s initial assessment, the fire originated from the lower ground floor of the mall. About 70 fire trucks from different cities, municipalities and volunteer groups responded to the incident.

No injuries and casualties were reported, according to BFP-Muntinlupa. Damage to property was placed at P100 million. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
