SPD ready to enforce Comelec gun ban

The Southern Police District (SPD) is readying to set up checkpoints in the southern part of Metro Manila for the imposition of Commission on Election (Comelec) gun ban from Jan. 9 to June 8.

SPD director Brig. Gen. Jimili Macaraeg said they will establish checkpoints to effectively implement the gun ban during the campaign period for the national and local elections.

“With the upcoming national and local elections, we will intensify efforts to maintain a peaceful start of campaign period up to election day by conducting a series of operations, inspection of crime-prone areas, police and mobile visibility and patrolling,” Macaraeg said.

Macaraeg said that with the implementation of the nationwide gun ban, the permit to carry a firearm outside residence will also be suspended in accordance with the Comelec Resolution No. 10278.

He said under the Comelec resolution, bearing, carrying and transporting of firearms and other deadly weapon are prohibited, and only members of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and other law enforcement agencies who are performing official duties in agency-prescribed uniforms will be allowed.

The SPD chief also asked gun owners to cooperate with the Comelec gun ban.
