DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevara said as of Dec. 29, the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) site has recruited 1,871 out of 4,000 health care workers (HCWs) for the post-COVID 19 vaccination surveillance project.

“The study is expected to end by June 30, 2022,” she told the Manila Bulletin in an interview.

The 12-month nationwide surveillance program started on July 1, 2021. Led by Dr. Regina Berba of UP-Manila (UPM), the study aims to estimate the

vaccine effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines used in the real world setting in the Philippines by immunogenicity and prevention of symptomatic COVID-19.

Also involved in the study were the Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, local government units (LGUs) and the Department of Health (DOH).

The immunosurveillance program is targeting at least 5,000 fully vaccinated adults via antibody testing that will be done at weeks 2, 12, 24, 36, and 52 after receiving the second dose.

Guevara said aside from the UP-PGH, two other study sites were opened and recruited participants in December last year.

She said San Miguel Corporation (SMC) study site was opened on Dec. 10, and as of Dec. 29, 78 study participants have been recruited.

Another site, Barangay UP Campus was opened on Dec. 11, and as of Dec. 29, 90 study participants have been recruited.

Guevara said the Philippine National Police (PNP) study site “will be formally opened as soon as the MOA (memorandum of agreement) between PNP and UPM is signed by the new PNP Chief.”

She said Baguio General Hospital as a study site is “currently being prepared.”

He said the project has been approved with a budget of P 114.9 million.
