PGH's COVID-19 ICU hits full capacity

The intensive care unit (ICU) for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) has hit full capacity, hospital spokesperson Dr. Jonas del Rosario said Saturday, Jan. 8.

"Ngayon po yung aming ICU ay puno, 100 occupied yung ICU for COVID. Pero yung amin pong beds, actually hindi kami makapaglagay ngayon ng cap kasi marami sa aming non-COVID patients, nagiging COVID kaya di rin naman namin sila naidadagdag lang (Our ICU is now full, 100 percent occupied. But we can't put a cap right now because many of our non-COVID patients catch COVID, so we constantly add more beds)," del Rosario said during a virtual public briefing.

"We're probably about 80 percent of our occupancy now. Pero dahil kami po ay COVID-referral center at marami po sa aming pasyente merong talaga namang non-COVID concerns at nagkaka-COVID lang sila along the way, tinatanggap namin (But because we're a COVID-referral center and many of our patients who have non-COVID concerns eventually get COVID-19 along the way, we just admit them)," he added.

At present, PGH is attending to 255 COVID-19 patients.

Del Rosario said the state-run hospital is opening more beds reopening more wards to answer to the needs of COVID-19 patients needing admission.
