DOST-FNRI studying maternal nutrition status in select areas in PH
The Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-FNRI) is conducting a survey to determine the maternal nutrition status and gestational weight gain in selected areas in the country.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” de la Peña disclosed this during his weekly report on Friday, Jan. 7.
“The DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) is undertaking a project to study the maternal nutrition status and gestational weight gain in selected areas in the Philippines,” he said on the DOSTv Facebook page.
He said the DOST-FNRI was in touch with concerned local government units (LGUs) that have been included in the survey.
“The DOST-FNRI is coordinating with the local government units, city health offices/municipal health offices, and local midwives via email, phone calls and SMS,” the DOST chief said.
“Phone interviews with pregnant women have been coordinated and conducted as well,” he added.
The DOST-FNRI had conducted a study showing that there is a high prevalence of protein and micronutrient inadequacies in the diet of breastfeeding Filipino mothers.
The cross-sectional, observational and non-interventional study titled “Statistical Analysis and report of the Food and Nutrient Intake and Dietary Patterns of Breastfeeding Filipino Mothers” showed that rice (94.3 percent), fats and oils (74.3 percent), sweetened beverages (68.6 percent), bread (65.7 percent), fish and shellfish (47.5 percent) were the top 5 most consumed foods of breastfeeding mothers.
