PH's outstanding R&D, S&T institutes recognized

The country’s outstanding research and development institute (RDI), science and technology (S&T) institute, and a state university were recognized during the 2021 Department of Science and Technology (DOST)- Elsevier Awards.

The DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), in partnership with global scientific publication aggregator Elsevier, conferred awards to the following DOST offices that emerged as winners for the Highest ScienceDirect Usage:

-DOST-Forest Product Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) under the RDI category;

-DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI) under the S&T institutes category; and

-DOST Regional Office No. 2 under the Regional Office (RO) category.

ScienceDirect is a leading platform of peer-reviewed scholarly literature. It serves as Elsevier’s leading information solution for researchers, teachers, students, healthcare professionals and information professionals, offering millions of full-text publications, including journal articles and books chapters from Elsevier, its imprints and society partners.

The PCIEERD noted that the awardees were chosen among DOST RDIs and S&T institutes and the 10 SUCs who were given IP-based access to the subscription.

Bagging Highest Publications Scopus and the Most Accepted Proposals awards, both under the SUC category was the Central Luzon State University (CLSU).

The CLSU received the Most Accepted Proposals award for having the most number of proposals submitted to DOST.

Serving as the abstract and indexing database of choice, Scopus is used by more than 3,000 academic, government and corporate institutions and is the main data source that supports the Elsevier Research Intelligence portfolio, PCIEERD noted.

DOST-PCIEERD Dr. Enrico C. Paringit urged the scientific community to use Elsevier, the world’s largest scientific publisher of peer-reviewed journals and articles.

“Science-based researched and science-backed decisions are critical especially at these trying times. While we navigate our way through the new normal, we wish to increase the numbers of our partner intuitions who will use Elsevier in whatever science breakthroughs they will do in the future,” he said.

“Greater access to high-quality scientific literature is encouraged now that our way of lives has changed amid the pandemic. As we strive to find solutions, all these available resources will help us innovate more,” he added.

Currently, 667 higher education institutions (HEIs), R&D institutes, government agencies and DOST regional offices nationwide use online journal articles acquired through Elsevier.
