Metro Manila's positivity rate climbs to 45%, set to break case records - OCTA

The National Capital Region's (NCR) positivity rate has further increased to 45 percent, independent research group OCTA said on Thursday, Jan. 6.

OCTA Research Fellow Dr. Guido David made the statement in a tweet and said that with this, Metro Manila is set to break COVID-19 case records on Thursday with 10,000 to 11,000 new cases.
Positivity rate refers to the number of individuals who yielded positive results from among those who were tested for COVID-19.
Thursday's positivity rate exceeded the one recorded by OCTA on Jan. 3 which was already a record-high 34.7 percent that surpassed the previous high in April 2021 at 29.6 percent.
Meanwhile, David said that the country's new cases are projected to be 15,000 to 16,000. OCTA noted that the surge has not peaked yet and that the country is expected to exceed 20,000 new cases by January 7.
On the other hand, David stated in a CNN Philippines interview that the high positivity rate being experienced has caused a strain in the testing system of Metro Manila.
"Apart from the hoarding that's happening with, with drugs, over the counter drugs and medicine, but now the testing system is strained because of a large number of people wanting to get tested," David said.
"So, we are requesting our kababayans to those who are requiring tests. Some of them who may be feeling symptoms should probably assume that they already have the virus with a high number of transmissions that we're seeing right now," he added.
