All that you love to eat at the Ilonggo Night Market

The pandemic’s second holiday season had a bit of semblance of normalcy as restrictions had been eased. And indeed, the recent fourth Ilonggo Night Market and Street Food Hawkers Festival was an avenue for friends and families to reconnect.

“Food is always part of our gatherings,” said Chef Rafael Jardeleza Jr., the culinary advocate more popularly known as Chef Tibong.

More than 30 food businesses—ranging from popular Ilonggo restaurants to street kiosks—made holiday reunions more memorable at the almost week-long street food festival at SM City Iloilo.

For some, it was nostalgia with Ilonggo and Pinoy classics such as La Paz batchoy of Popoy’s, the popular chicken inasal of Fort San Pedro Drive-In, the kinilaw of Beige Eatery, the tusok-tusok or the variety of grilled barbeques, and the fishball of Mama Dra.

Guests at opening night were treated with chicken binakol by Chef Boy Logro. The Idol sa Kusina (kitchen idol) came all the way to Iloilo just to make his own version of the beloved chicken-based soup popular in Iloilo and the rest of Western Visayas.

Aside from the native dishes, there were also other choices such as Singaporean chili crabs of Yumchow, Korean dishes of Toki Toki, the juicy chicken sandwich of Kalan, the Huwanchu Comfort Bowl of Hu-Wanchu Samgyeopsal in collaboration with Rebel Burgers, and the variety of siomai of Yok Pek.

The fourth Ilonggo Night Market and Street Food Hawkers Festival was Chef Tibong’s closing event for the year, which was capped by the declaration of Iloilo as the “Food Haven of the Philippines.” It is also part of the month-long Iloilo Art Festival organized by the Iloilo City government under Mayor Jerry Treñas and the private sector.
