'Squid Game,' 'Red Notice' emerge as most viewed show, movie on Netflix in 2021

The Korean hit series “Squid Game” and the film “Red Notice” became the most popular titles on OTT platform Netflix in 2021.

Streaming analytics company FlixPatrol released the rankings of the most popular shows and movies on different video streaming platforms in 2021.

On Netflix, “Squid Game” grabbed first place as the No. 1 show on the platform in 2021, garnering a total of 57,980 points based on FlixPatrol’s metrics.

“Points for rankings are calculated based on the position in the chart. 10 points for being in #1 position, 9 points for being in #2 position,” according to the company.

“Squid Game” was released on Netflix on Sept. 17 and quickly gained popularity worldwide. In October, Netflix declared “Squid Game” as its biggest show of all time.

The series stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon, HoYeon Jung, O Yeong-su, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung. It tells the story of 456 cash-strapped people playing deadly games for a 45.6 billion won ($38 million) prize. Season 2 has been confirmed.

Placing second is “Money Heist” followed by “Lupin,” “Sex/Life,” “Bridgerton,” “New Amsterdam,” “Lucifer,” “Who Killed Sara,” “Yo soy Betty la fea” and “Maid.”

Song Joong-ki’s “Vincenzo” ranked 15th while “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha,” starring Shin Min-a and Kim Seon-ho, is in 26th place.
