The recently concluded 2022 Sibol National Team Selection gave the fans a glimpse of how the MPL Philippines Season 9 could look like when the new season opens on Feb. 18.
Some of the teams’ off-season acquisitions performed well in the tournament and are now shifting their focus to the MPL S9 preparations as their respective teams aim to bounce back after falling short in Sibol.
Bren Esports’ rookie players Vincent “Joy Boy” De Guzman and Kenneth “Saxa” Fedelin made a good account of themselves in the four-day tournament along with veteran captain Angelo “Pheww” Arcangel.
Although the squad failed to go deep in the Sibol phase 2, veteran coach Francis “Duckey” Glindro was happy with the squad’s performance in the tournament.
“I’m still happy with our performance despite only having a few days of preparation. I want to express my gratitude to two amazing players from PowerPack Gaming, Kevzz and Granzo for filling the spots in our roster for this qualifier,” wrote Duckey after his wards got eliminated by Onic Philippines in the lower bracket of the Sibol qualifiers.
“We will move forward from this and see you all in the upcoming MPL Season 9,” added the M2 champion coach.
Another revelation in the Sibol action was RSG Philippines which had a dominant showing in the upper bracket before it suffered defeats at the hands of Blacklist International and Nexplay Evos.
Season 8 best rookie Jhonard “Demonkite” Caranto showed vast improvement in his game while new addition of Dylan “Light” Catipon made the squad even more formidable, evident in the squad's surprising Sibol run.
“Just want to say I'm very proud of my players. Dylan Aaron Catipon - For creating the good mood and putting confidence sa team. John Cedrix Caranto - For always sharing the weight of the team and trying to be the best until becoming the Best,” said coach Brian “Panda” Lim who also lauded RSG MPLS S9 member Kenneth “Kenji” Villa and Arvie Calderon, and Christian “Iy4knu” Manaog who came back from his vacation to bolster their Sibol squad.
The three upcoming players from NXPE also shone in the Sibol qualifiers and are jelling well with mainstays Jeniel “Yellyhaze” Bata-anon and the much-improved John Paul “H2wo” Salonga.
The former AP Esports trio of Kenneth “Cadenza” Castro, Rainiel “Ureshii” Logronio, and Mariusz “Donut” Tan were instrumental to NXPE’s second place finish in the tournament.
Contenders Omega Esports and Onic Philippines were also solid in their Sibol campaigns and are bound to better in MPL S9 when its young stars return to the team's main five.
