Olivia McDaniel was glad to step up on both sides during a tense penalty shootout that ended with the national women’s football team securing a spot in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The stocky goalkeeper had two saves late in the shootout while also keeping the Pinay booters’ chance alive by scoring one which contributed to the pulsating 4-3 victory over Taiwan in the quarterfinals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
“I thought that it’s make or break right now, and you need to show up for your team right now,” McDaniel said following the historic match at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune, India.
“There was nothing else going through my head but ‘You’re going to make this save, you’re going to do this’ and luckily it worked out that way,” added the 24-year-old.
Many were perhaps curious when McDaniel was tapped to take the Philippines’ fifth kick of the shootout, especially with Taiwan ahead 3-2 and needing a save, miss or deflection to seal the victory.
But McDaniel, who before the attempt had stopped a weak shot by Su Sin-Yun, calmly converted from the spot which set up for more late-game drama.
Coach Alen Stajcic later hailed McDaniel’s composure in having to do an “unbelievably brave act” of taking the all-important attempt.
But a confident McDaniel said that pressure of being in a role rarely seen in a goalkeeper was nothing compared to doing the shot-stopping duties.
“To be honest, I was more nervous to stop the PK (penalty kick) than to take the PK,” she said. “I’ve been hitting PKs for forever, and I get no nerves when I go up and take a PK because I know it's gonna go in the back of the net,” said McDaniel.
McDaniel came back behind the sticks, atoning for failing to deflect Zhou Li-Ping’s left-footed strike that evened the score at 1-1 late in regulation, by stopping the penalty kick of the same player.
That opened the door for Sarina Bolden to score the winning kick, sparking celebrations at the pitch and back home where a nation celebrated a first-ever World Cup berth.
“It's really surreal,” said McDaniel. “I’m just really proud of this team and proud we could do it for our country and be able to break history like this.”
