Mayor Zamora: Low number of COVID-19 infections can be sustained amid waning Omicron

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora expressed hope that the low number of COVID-19 infections in the city would continue despite the threat of the more transmissible Omicron and Delta variants.

During his interview with CNN Philippines on Monday, Zamora said that the decline in active COVID-19 cases in the city can be sustained because of San Juan's aggressive COVID-19 response and the help of its residents.

He lauded San Juaneños' strict observance of the minimum public health and safety protocols, and support to the local government unit's COVID-19 vaccination program.

Zamora also explained that the Metro Manila Council's (MMC) decision to downgrade the National Capital Region's(NCR’s) alert status from 3 to 2 is backed by science and research.

He cited that the number of infections in NCR is continuously decreasing due to its high vaccination rate and the citizens' health protocols compliance.

In San Juan City, its active COVID-19 cases dropped to 272 on Sunday, Jan. 30, coming from a record high 1,947 cases last Jan. 12. The decline is an 86.03 percent drop in just 18 days.

However, Zamora reminded the public to not be complacent despite the decrease in active COVID-19 cases. He also urged the public to get vaccinated and boosted against the coronavirus.

Metro Manila is set to return to Alert Level 2 on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
