The San Juan City local government announced on Monday, Jan. 3, that its active COVID-19 cases have jumped to almost 200 amid the surge in COVID-19 cases in the county caused by the holiday season and threats of the Omicron and Delta variants.
In an interview with CNN Philippines, San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said that as of Jan. 2, the city has recorded 197 active COVID-19 cases from five active cases recorded on Dec. 14.
Zamora said that the Metro Manila Council met on Sunday, Jan. 2, regarding the national government's decision to place the National Capital Region (NCR) under Alert Level 3 starting Monday, Jan. 3 up to Jan. 15 after experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases.
The mayor urged his constituents to get vaccinated through the city's vaccination program to protect themselves.
Zamora had earlier announced the opening of the COVID-19 vaccination registration for children aged 5-11 years old due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the city and the impending approval by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases of the rules allowing children 5-11 years old to get vaccinated against the virus.
He also received his booster shot at the FilOil Flying V Center, the city’s primary vaccination hub. He got his second dose of the vaccine last May and is already due for a booster shot.
