PH Consulate General holds documentary premiere, lecture on Santo Niño’s history, culture to Filipino children in Barcelona

The Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona, in collaboration with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), held the premiere of the documentary “Santo Niño in Philippine History and Culture” in early December last year. NHCP chairperson Dr. Rene Escalante provided a prologue to the documentary and spoke on how the Santo Niño had been a part of Filipino culture since it arrived in Cebu in the year 1521.

The film documentary was followed by a lecture given by Brother Aaron Veloso of the National Commission on Culture and Arts (NCCA) with the theme “Santo Nino Gugma Ko:The Child Jesus in Filipino Christianity,” expounded on how the devotion of the Filipinos to Santo Niño evolved from its arrival in 1521 up to its present standing as one of the most venerated Catholic image in the Philippines.

Coro Kudyapi, a choir composed of children born in Spain of Filipino parents, provided intermission numbers in the form of songs to the delight of those in attendance.  

The objective of the cultural and public diplomacy program of the consulate was to provide insights on Philippine culture and religious traditions to the second and third generation Filipino children in Spain.

The two-hour program was covered by the Radio Television Malacañang and was streamed live through their website.
