DepEd: Classes in basic education resume on Jan. 3

After the Christmas vacation, it’s back to school for millions of students in basic education on Monday, Jan. 3.

DepEd / MANILA BULLETIN

The Department of Education (DepEd), on its official social media accounts, announced the resumption of classes for School Year (SY) after the holiday break.

“Balik-eskwela na ngayong araw! Excited na ba kayong matuto ng bagong kaalaman ngayong bagong taon? (Back to school today! Are you excited to learn new knowledge this new year?),” DepEd said.

Based on DepEd Order No. 29 series of 2021 or the School Calendar and Activities for School Year 2021-2022, the Christmas break for SY 2021-2022 in public schools started on Dec. 20, 2021 and ended on Jan. 2, 2022.

Latest data from DepEd showed that there are 27.2 million enrollees in Kinder, Elementary, Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) in both public and private schools this school year.

Pilot face to face classes

Meanwhile, DepEd reminded stakeholders that pilot face to face classes in Metro Manila schools have been suspended starting Jan. 3.

“Mahalagang paalala na ang pilot implementation ng limited face-to-face classes sa National Capital Region (NCR) ay suspendido muna (Please be reminded that the pilot implementation of limited face-to-face classes in the National Capital Region (NCR) has been suspended),” DepEd said.

In a statement issued Jan. 2, DepEd said that the suspension of classes in Metro Manila is “consistent with the recent memorandum of the IATF COVID-19 cases in NCR.”

After consulting the Department of Health (DOH), DepEd said that face to face classes for pilot schools in Metro Manila are “suspended until the alert level reverts to Level 2.”

However, DepEd clarified that face to face classes in low risk areas will continue

“Ang mga piling paaralan na nasa ilalim ng Alert Level 1 at 2 ang magpapatuloy sa nasabing pilot run (Selected schools under Alert Level 1 and 2 will continue the pilot run),” DepEd added.

After getting the approval of President Duterte, DepEd started the pilot implementation of limited face to face classes in low risk areas on Nov. 15, 2021.

More qualified schools were allowed to join the pilot run, including those located in NCR on Dec. 6.

As per DO No. 29 s. of 2021, SY 2021-2022 consists of 209 school days --- inclusive of Saturdays and the five-day midyear break.

The SY 2021-2022 opened on Sept. 13, 2021 and is scheduled to on June 24, 2022.
