Pinay makes mark at Sundance

Filipina director Martika Ramirez Escobar carved a huge impact at this year's Sundance Film Festival with her film "Leonor Will Never Die" earning the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award: Innovative Spirit.

The presenting juror, La Frances Hui, described the film as "a playful display of the love of cinema."

"Its innovative and risk-taking spirit is especially commendable," she added.

Escobar described the film as a "labor of love."

"This is special coming from a film set that felt like one giant friendship film," she related, going on to thank Sundance.

"I'd like to say thanks to the entire Sundance team for treating us like family. I'd like to thank everyone who had showed their love and support for our film," she said. "You are proof that finally after eight years, our film is alive."

"Leonor Will Never Die" tells the story of an ageing writer-director rediscovering herself amid the harsh reality of everyday living.

Escobar has been writing and directing films since 2012.

Among her work are "Pusong Bato" (2014), "Anatromiya Ng Pag-Ibig" (2015), and "Living Things" (2020).

She also worked as cinematographer for the music videos of Zack Tabudlo and The Juans.
