Muntinlupa's active COVID-19 cases fall by 78%

Muntinlupa City’s active coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases fell sharply as more patients recovered.

Data from the Muntinlupa City Health Office showed that as of Jan. 28, the city’s active cases totaled 553, a decrease of 1,948 cases or 78 percent from 2,501 recorded on Jan. 27.

The CHO added 2,275 patients who have recovered from COVID-19, rising from 34,053 on Jan. 27 to 36,328.

There are also 329 new COVID-19 cases in Muntinlupa on Jan. 28 from 37,150 the previous day to 37,479. The CHO also recorded two new deaths to bring the total to 598.

In the press briefing by acting Presidential Spokesperson Karlo Nograles on Jan. 28, Health Usec. Maria Rosario Vergeire said COVID-19 cases in the National Capital Region (NCR) and NCR Plus areas are decreasing.

She said the majority of the COVID-19 cases in the NCR are asymptomatic, mild or moderate cases.

Vergeire said during the peak of the Delta variant in September, the number of severe and critical cases in the NCR reached 36 percent while it is only 18 percent now during the surge of Omicron variant cases.

She said this goes to show that the COVID-19 vaccine is effective to prevent hospitalization and having severe and critical conditions.

The Department of Health, University of the Philippines-Philippine Genome Center and the UP National Institutes of Health reported on Jan. 27 that of the new 677 samples that were sequenced, 618 or 91.3 percent are Omicron variant cases while 35 or 5 percent are Delta variant cases.

To date, five individuals with Omicron variant cases have died and the total number of confirmed Omicron variant cases in the country has reached 1,153.
