Magnitude 4.3 quake jolts Eastern Visayas -- Phivolcs

A 4.3-magnitude earthquake rocked the Eastern Visayas region at around 5:44 a.m., Friday, Jan. 28, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The epicenter of the earthquake was traced 9 kilometers (km) southwest of Capoocan, Leyte, at a shallow depth of 8 km.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was strongly felt at Intensity V in Capoocan, while it was "moderately strong" at Intensity IV in Carigara, Kananga, and Leyte in Leyte province.

It was also felt as a "weak" tremor at Intensity III in Ormoc City; Tunga, San Isidro, Tabango, Calubian, and Villalba, Leyte; and Cabucgayan and Biliran, Biliran.

The earthquake was slightly felt at Intensity II in Alangalang, Jaro, and Pastrana in Leyte

Phivolcs said that the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

The earthquake may have caused damage to property, it added.

However, Phivolcs does not expect aftershocks due to this earthquake.
