Japan to provide over P256-M in food aid to 'Odette'-affected communities
More than P256-million emergency food aid will be provided by the Japanese government to the survivors of typhoon Odette in the Philippines through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

This was announced by the Japan Embassy in the country after Japanese government officials in Rome, Italy exchanged note verbale with the representatives of the WFP on Jan. 19.
Under the diplomatic note between Japan and Italy, the WFP will receive US$ 5 million for the project dubbed “Emergency food and logistics assistance to vulnerable populations affected by Typhoon Odette, Philippines.”
Through the grant, the WFP as the implementing partner, will extend immediate food and logistic assistance to the affected and vulnerable populations severely affected by the typhoon which hit parts of Visayas and Mindanao in December 2021.
The food and logistics assistance is part of the US$ 13 million or about P663- million disaster relief assistance pledged by Japan on Jan. 14.

Around 26,000 households or about 130,000 people will benefit from the grant. Displaced families in evacuation and temporary shelters, as well as most vulnerable communities, will be prioritized for this initiative, the Japanese embassy said.
The WFP will collaborate with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for the identification of the most affected and vulnerable communities.
"Through this assistance, affected communities are expected to have stabilized household food security, which is critical for the restoration of livelihoods and asset building activities in agriculture, fisheries and other sectors," the embassy said.
Meanwhile, on Jan. 20, the Japan Embassy in the Philippines disclosed that Japan will work with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to provide P215-million in shelter assistance and health services for Filipinos affected by typhoon Odette in Visayas and Mindanao.
