ICYMI: Bisaya, sinigang, pagmamano, and other Filipino customs seen on Cartoon Network

Filipino culture is having a moment in the global pop culture scene, especially our beloved lolas. After seeing them on Disney’s Christmas ads and in “Spider-man: No Way Home,” lolas and other Filipino traditions are now being shown in Cartoon Network courtesy of the “Craig of the Creek” series.

Going viral on social media is a scene from its “Sink or Swim Team” episode where Eileen introduces her grandma to the show’s lead Craig, and to everyone’s surprise, the old lady spoke in Bisaya. Let’s just say that her lola’s response, “Ah, ka guapo, imu ning boyfriend?(Oh, he’s handsome, is he your boyfriend?),” is both hilarious and super relatable.

The show, now in its fourth season, continues to explore other Filipino customs in the episode such as pagmamano (a gesture of respect to the elders), the very local method of rice cooking using fingers to measure water, ice cream containers as food storage, and the delicious tortang talong and sinigang na isda.

This is not the first time Filipino culture was presented on Cartoon Network. In 2018, its show “Steven Universe,” Lars baked an ube cake or a purple yam cake with Steven and Sadie.
