Duque willing to face House probe over handling of COVID-19 response

Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III said he is ready to face the House of Representatives’ inquiry over the government's handling of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) response.
Duque made the statement after the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability earlier recommended to file charges against him and former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Director-General Rolando Enrique Domingo over the policies and guidelines of DOH and FDA for the "registration, utilization, manufacture, distribution or sale of drug products for the coronavirus disease."
However, the lawmakers also recalled the said committee report on Wednesday to allow government officials involved to explain.
"Yes, I am ready to explain my side on the issues raised against FDA. As Sec of Health, I am not involved in the direct operational and regulatory functions of FDA as it has its laws to enforce to ensure safety, efficacy, and quality of drugs, medicines, vaccines, and devices for public use," the Health chief said in a text message.
Domingo, meanwhile, maintained that COVID-19 medicines approved in the country were safe and of quality.
"All applications for COVID-19 drugs were evaluated properly and approved in a timely manner based on scientific evidence of quality, safety, and efficacy," he said in a text message.
