DepEd's help sought as more teachers report unauthorized online transactions

A group of teachers sought the assistance of the Department of Education (DepEd) to help resolve the issue of unauthorized online transactions reported by several teaching personnel.

The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) said that as of Jan. 25, it has already submitted an initial list of teachers whose accounts were allegedly “hacked” to DepEd.

TDC, a 30,000-strong group, said that the number of teachers who reported unauthorized online transactions on their Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) accounts has reached 20.

These reported cases, TDC said, come from the National Capital Region (NCR), Region III, Region IV-A, Region IV-B, Region V, and Region VI. The amounts involved range from P900 to P200,000.

Contrary to LBP's claim, TDC Chairperson Benjo Basas said that those similar cases show that the two cases that have been identified earlier were not isolated ones.

Basas said that TDC also formally sought the help of the (DepEd) that may be necessary to resolve this issue.

“We are seeking the assistance of the DepEd until this issue is resolved in the most favorable manner,” Basas said.

“Clearly, the victims here are the teachers and the LBP must not conveniently pass the blame on them,” Basas said, adding that the LBP should not tag the incidents as “isolated cases or valid transactions.”

In a statement, LBP maintained that its systems remain “safe and secured” and that the issue stemmed from the device used by the teachers.

TDC said that a “thorough examination” will be needed to establish the possible liability of both the clients and the LBP rather than the “one-sided investigation initiated and concluded by the bank in some cases.”
