Bongbong says martial law to be declared only during war

Presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. believed that declaring a martial law “has its place” and said he will not immediately resort to that if ever Filipinos hold a people power against him during his election.

Marcos Jr. made the pronouncement Tuesday, Jan. 25 in DZRH’s Presidential Job interview after he was asked what he would do should the people, including the military, rally against him during his oath taking for presidency.

The presidential aspirant said he will negotiate with the people and know their problem.

“Alangan naman (It’s not an immediate option that) we will start a civil war,” he said.

But for Marcos, whose father—a former president—was ousted following a people power, it would be a different scenario if the opposing side would start to fire shots.

“‘Yun ang delikado sa lahat (That’s the most dangerous of all) because that would be a civil war,” he said.

Asked if he will declare a martial law if that happens, Marcos did not categorically answer but said “that will harden the people’s position.” He also said he would just negotiate with the people, solidify the government’s position and bring the people to safety.

Marcos also said martial law is only declared during “wars,” and it is the military that should decide.

“The bottomline is that you have to keep the peace and security of the community. May lugar ang martial law, martial law para sa gera, kung may gera (Martial law has its place. It’s only during wars),” he said.
