A total of nine persons have been arrested in Taguig since the start of the nationwide gun ban imposed in connection with the May 9 national and local elections.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) imposed the gun ban starting last Jan. 9 which will be in effect until June 8.
According to the Southern Police District (SPD), since the implementation of the gun ban, the police have arrested nine individuals and confiscated seven firearms, one explosive and 30 ammunition.

Last Jan. 21, the Taguig police arrested Alberto Cruz, 65, a driver, in Pepay Compound, Barangay Wawa, Taguig, for possession of a firearm and a grenade in violation of the gun ban. The police said Cruz is the suspected leader of the Berto Carnapping Group
The Comelec and the Philippine National Police have set up Comelec checkpoints in different areas in the National Capital Region (NCR) to enforce the gun ban.
“During the election period, no person shall bear, carry or transport firearms or other deadly weapons in public places, including any building, street, park, private vehicle or public conveyance, even if licensed to possess or carry the same, unless authorized in writing by the Commission,” according to the Comelec.
The Comelec’s Committee on the Ban on Firearms and Security Concerns (CBFSC) has the sole and exclusive authority to issue certificates of authority, allowing the “bearing, carrying or transporting of firearms or other deadly weapons; or employment, availment or engagement of the services of security personnel or bodyguards; or transport or delivery of firearms and/or its parts, ammunition and/or its components, and, explosives and/or its components.”
During the gun ban period, the following acts are prohibited, according to the Comelec: To carry firearms and deadly weapons outside residence or place of business, and in all public places; to engage the services of security personnel; and to transport firearms and explosives, including its spare parts and components.
Violation of the gun ban will incur penalties of imprisonment from one to six years, permanent disqualification from public office and loss of right to vote, and deportation for foreigners (only after prison term is served), according to the Comelec.
