Solon backs Sara's call to make military service mandatory

Cebu 1st District Rep. Eduardo Gullas has backed aspiring vice president Sara Duterte-Carpio's plan to make military service mandatory for those 18 years old as he believed "is it good for nation building."

Gullas, who authored House Bill 1788 to reinstate the Reserve Officers' Training Corps in all higher education institutions, said that a mandatory military service will not only improve our national defense preparedness but also "instill in young Filipinos a deeper sense of duty to country."

"Military service will likewise provide young Filipinos new life skills and reinforce their abilities to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of life," he added.

On Tuesday, Jan. 18, Duterte-Carpio said she would use her office if elected vice president to push the Congress to come up with a law to mandate military service, like what is done in South Korea.

The presidential daughter's plan, according to Gullas, "is even better than our bill that seeks to revive the mandatory military education and training program for male college students."
