PBA Board to discuss future of halted Governors' Cup

The PBA’s top brass hopes to make a decision on how it can start the halted Governors’ Cup in a board meeting slated Monday, Jan. 24.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial and the Board of Governors will tackle the situation surrounding the season-ending conference which is currently on hold after an uptick in COVID-19 cases at the start of the calendar year.

Daily cases have reached more or less 30,000 in recent days. but data experts have seen a slight drop in numbers.

If the trend continues by February, the league may have been given the chance it needed to once again restart the reinforced conference.

Marcial said the meeting could help the league navigate its way towards an eventual resumption of the reinforced tournament, which had 13 playdates since it opened last Dec. 8.

Other matters relating to the said situation is the possible setup, since there’s a likelihood that the league won’t be playing its games in front of fans or even at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Momentum was on the PBA’s side last month when games moved to the Big Dome for the first time since the pandemic under a limited capacity before the surge put things back to square one.

So far, the PBA has received the endorsement of the Games and Amusements Board to observe a home-venue-home setup in Metro Manila, which remains under Alert Level 3.
