Magnitude 5.4 quake jolts Davao Oriental -- Phivolcs

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake rocked Davao Region at around 4:43 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 22, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The epicenter of the earthquake was traced 15 kilometers (km) southeast of Baganga, Davao Oriental at a depth of 102 kilometers.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was "moderately strong" at Intensity IV in Baganga and Caraga in Davao Oriental and Maco in Davao de Oro.

Meanwhile, it was felt as a "weak" tremor at Intensity III in Mawab and Monkayo, Davao de Oro; Lupon, Manay and San Isidro, Davao Oriental; Bislig City, Surigao del Sur; and Rosario, Agusan del Sur.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur due to this earthquake.
