Bienvenido Marañon joins Malaysian club Johor Darul Ta'zim

Naturalized striker Bienvenido Marañon will join Malaysia’s best club after officially signing with league champion Johor Darul Ta’zim.

The winners of the last eight Malaysia Super League seasons confirmed the signing, several days after Marañon left United City for a chance to play for one of Southeast Asia’s best clubs.

His signing co-incided with JDT’s addition of Azkals veteran Carli de Murga, who had been teammates with Marañon before at Ceres-Negros.

JDT is perhaps the biggest club in Malaysia, being owned by Tunku Ismael Idris, the Crown Prince of Johor.

It has tasted continental success before, winning the AFC Cup in 2015 led by Malaysian star Safiq Rahim.

Marañon is the latest among Filipino footballers to play in Malaysia, joining de Murga, Manny Ott and Kevin Mendoza.

Ott starred last year for Melaka United while Mendoza led Kuala Lumpur City to the Malaysia Cup title as starting goalkeeper.

Other Filipinos are also plying their trade in Thailand, mostly for clubs in the country’s top-tier Thal 1 League.
