Vice Gov. Imelda Papin reacts to Mayor Sara Duterte's 'stop the pageants' comment

Vice Gov. Imelda Papin of Camarines Sur said she respects the comment of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte who said that local government units (LGUs) should stop holding barangay pageants and basketball leagues, citing waste of money.

"Let's respect each other's decision when it comes to LGUs, para walang away. If she thinks makabubuti yun sa Davao City, then let's respect her decision," said Papin during a Zoom meeting with the entertainment press on Friday, Jan. 21.

Papin was reacting to a comment by Duterte who said that the youth should focus on disaster management programs.

"Pero para sa akin, kung private entity naman ang organizers ng mga pageant at hindi naman government fund ang gagamitin sa mga barangay contest na ito, puwede naman natin ituloy ito. Para sa akin nakakatulong din ito sa paghubog sa ating mga kabataan," said Papin, who was crowned Ambassadors for Women of the World,” along with her daughter Maffi, recently. The pageant is a new international search for mother and daughter tandem.

Earlier, Duterte said: "Tigilan na natin itong mga liga, mga pageant at kung anu-ano pang ginagawa sa fiesta, dancing contest. Tigilan na natin yan dahil nasasayang ang pera ng gobyerno sa sa mga ganyan, sa mga trophy at mga kung anu-anong prizes na binibigay natin. Sabi kom itiutok natin ang ating mga Sangguniang Kabataan dto sa Davao City sa disaster preparedness."

Duterte also said that she would push for mandatory military service if she wins the 2022 national elections.

Commenting on Duterte's mandatory military service plan, Papin said: "Dapat sigurong pag-aralan din natin yan para maayos ang pag implement nito."

Papin, dubbed the Sentimental Songstress, is running for governor of Camarines Sur int the 2022 national elections.
