Jesus summoned those whom he wanted

In the Old Testament, particularly in the story of Gideon, God would purposely reduce the number of Israelite warriors to reveal HIS power, lest the Israelites say that their own power brought them victory (Jgs 7:2). The same is true of Jesus’ choice of the Apostles. They are chosen not for any qualifications they possess. The Gospels do not even hide their weaknesses. They are called because they are the ones Jesus wants. In fulfilling the lofty objective of preaching “to the ends of the earth,” these ordinary men show us how God can work his ways through our ordinariness as human beings.

Gospel • MARK 3:13-19

Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those whom he wanted and they came to him. He appointed Twelve, whom he also named Apostles, that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach and to have authority to drive out demons: He appointed the Twelve: Simon, whom he named Peter; James, son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, whom he named Boanerges, that is, sons of thunder; 18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus; Thaddeus, Simon the Cananean, 19and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.
