'Amihan' slightly weakens, continues to affect Luzon – PAGASA

The northeast monsoon, locally called ‘amihan’, has weakened, but it is expected to bring a cold weather condition and cloudy skies with isolated rains in Luzon, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Thursday, Jan. 20.

PAGASA weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said that in the next 24 hours, the northeast monsoon may affect Luzon, while the shear line or the convergence of warm and cold winds may bring isolated rains and thunderstorms in the eastern section of southern Luzon.

“Nakakaranas tayo ng malamig na simoy ng hangin dito lamang po sa Luzon dahil bahagyang humina ang amihan sa araw na ito. Samantala, patuloy pa rin ang pag-iral ng shear line, naaapektuhan po silangang bahagi ng southern Luzon (We are only experiencing cold weather in Luzon because the northeast monsoon has slightly weakened. Meanwhile, the shear line continues to prevail over the eastern section of southern Luzon) ,” said Aurelio in a public weather forecast.

An intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) was also spotted over southern Mindanao but it is not expected to bring rains and affect the country in the next 24 hours, said Aurelio.

Meanwhile, residents of Bicol region, Quezon, northern Samar, eastern Samar, and Samar were warned against possible flash floods or landslides during moderate to at times heavy rains that the shear line may bring.

The State weather bureau added that cloudy skies with light rains may be experienced in Cagayan Valley and Aurora due to the northeast monsoon.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon may likewise experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the northeast monsoon, while partly cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms may prevail in Mindanao and the rest of Visayas due to localized thunderstorms.

Currently, no weather disturbance is expected to affect the country, PAGASA said.
