Amazon drops first look at 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power'

Tales of the Second Age of Middle-earth are about to unfold

After releasing a glimpse of the forthcoming series last August 2021, Amazon finally drops the first trailer for the highly-anticipated “The Lord of the Rings” series and reveals its title.

Dubbed “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” the series is set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, presenting the forging of the iconic rings and more. The show will foreshadow the events that took place a thousand years after in J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic high-fantasy novels, “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings.”

“‘The Rings of Power’ unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliances of Elves and Men,” co-showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay said in a statement. “Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring—but before there was one, there were many... and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all.”

In the teaser released on Jan. 19, 2022, a voiceover echoes Tolkien's “Ring Verse,” which says:

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,

Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,

Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,

One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Season one of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is set to premiere on Prime Video on Sept. 2, with new episodes dropping every Friday. Its second season is expected to be filmed in the second quarter of 2022.
