Metro Manila's COVID hospital bed occupancy up by 41% from previous week -- OCTA

Independent research group OCTA expressed concern over the increasing number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) positive individuals admitted into the hospitals, which has almost doubled over the past week.

"The number of occupied hospital beds for COVID-19 in the NCR increased to 41 percent over a span of one week, from 1,381 on Dec. 24 to 1,942 on Dec. 31," OCTA Research Fellow Dr. Guido David said in a tweet on Sunday, Jan. 2.

Moreover, David noted that occupancy for intensive care units (ICU) for COVID-19 patients increased by 37 percent, from 231 to 316, over the same period.

"Overall, hospital bed occupancy in the NCR is at 23 percent while ICU occupancy is at 25 percent, both are considered to be very low at this time," he said.

David explained that hospital occupancy is considered at a critical level once it reaches 70 percent.

Meanwhile, he pointed out that there was an increase in the number of pediatric cases, which account for more than one-eighth of active cases nationwide.

Those below nine years old account for 6.19 percent of the total cases as of Jan. 1, 2022.

Citing the data from OCTA Research Fellow Dr. Benjamin Co, the highest number of cases were found among those aged 20 to 29--accounting for 31.05 percent of the total cases--while those aged above 80 registered the least number of cases at 1.13 percent.
