Mayor Isko calls for observance of health protocols during Plaza Salamanca inauguration

Following the surge of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases throughout the National Capital Region (NCR), Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso urged the public to follow health and safety protocols in order to lessen the burden faced by medical frontliners.

Domagoso made it a point to urge the public to follow health and safety protocols given the COVID-19 surge spreading throughout NCR during the inauguration of the refurbished Plaza Salamanca in Ermita, Manila on Saturday, Jan. 1 made in honor of Doctor Olivia Salamaca, the second Filipino female physician who lived from 1889 to 1913 and spearheaded the campaign against tuberculosis.

“Sumunod po tayo sa mga patakaran at pairalin natin ang sariling disiplina upang maproteksyonan ang ating sarili at ipakita ang malasakit sa kapwa... Dalawang taon na tayo sa pandemya. Gawin natin ang nararapat upang masugpo na ito bilang pagtanaw na rin ng utang na loob sa ating mga medical frontliners katulad ni Dra. Olivia Salamanca na noong kanyang panahon ay nagsilbi sa bansa upang mapaglabanan ang tuberculosis pandemic in the 1900s (Please follow protocol and please discipline yourselves so that we can protect ourselves and others... We have been under pandemic for two years. Let’s do what we can to stop the pandemic as we are indebted to medical frontliners like Salamanca who, in her time, fought against the tuberculosis pandemic in the 1900s),” said Domagoso.

As of Sunday, Jan. 2, a total of 544 active COVID-19 cases were recorded in Manila, a one-day increase of 109 cases compared to the 435 cases recorded on Jan. 1.

Furthermore, about 14 cases of the Omicron COVID-19 variant have been detected in the Philippines, 11 imported cases and three local transmissions.
