DepEd pushes for promotion of local history amid curriculum review

With the ongoing K to 12 curriculum review, the Department of Education (DepEd) aims to further enrich the students’ knowledge of Philippine history through the promotion of local history.

“We are emphasizing local history, and I believe in local history,” she said. “Ang national heroes natin taga saan ba sila? (Our national heroes, where are they from?” she added.

Briones also emphasized that DepEd is proactive in promoting national history using other forms aside from the formal lessons or books used in the curriculum.

She noted that only recently, DepEd has expressed active support to the theater presentation of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) on Lapulapu.

“So it's not only in the lesson but also in other forms of art and communication, we always emphasize and I have said this repeatedly, we should not forget history abd that even as we catch up with digitalization and technology, and critical thinking, let's not forget that we are Filipinos,” Briones said in a mix of English and Filipino.

DepEd said that it also sponsored live performances of the opera “Noli Me Tangere” where teachers nationwide attended opera for the first time

The agency is also a major sponsor of the Encyclopedia of the Philippine Arts of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Briones noted that DepEd is also enriching Philippine historical events as it continues to refine and reexamine the basic education curriculum.

“The contributors to our culture and the sense of history is not just the responsibility of the Department of Education but we are doing all that we can, especially the gender aspect,” she added.
