Palace guarantees liability in NBP incident; full probe under way

Acting Presidential Spokesperson Karlo Nograles said a full investigation on the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) incident is now under way and assured that those found responsible for it will be penalized.

"Yes. Of course (somebody will be held liable), mayroon tayong mga procedures na sinusunod diyan kapag nagkakaroon ng ganiyang klaseng mga pangyayari (we have procedures that we must follow in the event of incidents like that), a full investigation is already under way," Nograles said in a press briefing Tuesday, Jan. 18.

The Cabinet Secretary further said there will be recommendations based on the investigation and "those who will be found responsible will be penalized."

On Monday, Jan. 17, three persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the maximum-security compound of the NBP in Muntinlupa City, who were "considered armed and dangerous," escaped from the national penitentiary.

Two of the three confirmed escapees had been killed when they fought it out with BuCor personnel and policemen during manhunt operations in Muntinlupa.

The third escapee, on the other hand, has not been located. The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has offered a P100,000 reward on information that could lead to his arrest.

BuCor Deputy Director General Gabriel P. Chaclag bared that there may be four escapees as one inmate remained missing and could not be located as of noon of Tuesday.
