Bishop expresses solidarity with the poor

Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)-Episcopal Commission on Family and Life chairman Paranaque Bishop Jesse Mercado has expressed solidarity with the poor as he assured them of the Church’s prayers and support.

The Church leader made the statement following a Commission on Population and Development report that showed more than 4 million Filipinos or more than 800,000 families are experiencing poverty particularly in the provinces most affected by the pandemic.

Bishop Mercado said poverty is being experienced even by many residents of bigger cities like Manila, Davao and Cebu City.

"I would like to assure you that the Diocese of Parañaque continues to offer prayers for relief from your current situation, if not for an end to your hardships,” the prelate said over Radio Veritas.

"In these difficult times, let us turn our gaze on the Lord who alone can provide us with everything that we need, particularly strength for us to get through these hardships,” the bishop said.

Bishop Mercado, likewise, appealed to the faithful to come up with concrete plans and action to effectively extend assistance to the poor and the needy. “Let us serve as God’s representatives to let others know that we are here for each other,” he said.
