SSS says members who tested positive for COVID-19 may avail of 'sickness benefits'

Members and pensioners who tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) may avail of “sickness benefits”, said an official of the Social Security System (SSS) in a televised interview on Friday, Jan. 14.

“Ang SSS noon pa man ay may sickness benefits at para ito sa mga member na may sakit na hindi nakapasok. Lahat ng klase ng sakit basta nawalan tayo ng kakayahang kumita ay kasama sa sickness benefit (Even before, SSS has sickness benefits and this is for those members with illness who can’t attend to work. All types of sickness, as long as they have lost the ability to earn, is included in the sickness benefit) ” said SSS acting vice president for public affairs and special events division Fernan Nicolas in an interview over DZBB.

Nicolas said that those members who tested positive for COVID-19 may likewise avail of the sickness benefits as long as they present a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test result.

“Sa COVID-19 ay kailangan positive bago makakuha ng sickness benefit, ibig sabihin may RT-PCR na ipapakita sa SSS at employer (For COVID-19 patients, we need a positive result before they can avail of the sickness benefit. This means that they need to show an RT-PCR to the SSS and their employer),” Nicolas added.

Nicolas also reiterated that the sickness benefit of those who belong in the employed sector may only be availed if their annual mandatory company sick leave is no longer available.

“Reminder lang na ang sickness benefits ay nakukuha ng mga miyembro doon sa employed sector kung ubos na ang kanilang mandatory company sick leave annually (Just a reminder that sickness benefits are only available to members in the employed sector when their annual mandatory sick leave had been used),” Nicolas added.
