Japan donates P663-M disaster relief to PH for 'Odette' survivors

Japan has announced that it will provide P663-million disaster relief aid to the Philippines to help the survivors of typhoon Odette.

"Today, the Government of Japan decided to provide a disaster relief aid of USD 13 million (approximately PHP 663 million) for the survivors of Typhoon Odette," the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines said in a statement on Friday, Jan. 14.

It added that the aid will be coursed through several international organizations for relief activities conducted in the severely-affected areas in the central and southern parts of the country.

The disaster relief aid, according to the embassy, is in addition to the disaster relief goods provided by Japan in Dec. 23, 2021.

"The Emergency Grand Aid, provided through multiple international organizations, will allow for the implementation of humanitarian assistance activities in areas such as food, shelter, non-food items, health, and water & sanitation, for the survivors in the central and southern parts of the Philippines," the Japan Embassy said.

It was disclosed that of the total donation, US$5 million was allocated to the World Food Programme (WFP) for food, nutrition, and logistics; US$4.2 million was given to International Organization for Migration (IOM) for shelter, health, camp coordination and camp Management; US1.83 million was coursed through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to provide shelter, non-food items, food, and water/sanitation/hygiene health necessities to victims; US$1.6 million to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF); US$0.2 million to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs for inter-agency coordination; and US$0.17 million to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to provide shelter and non-food items provisions.

The foreign country also said it intends to closely coordinate with the Philippines for the earliest recovery of the affected areas.

"Being a friend closer than a brother, Japan is fully committed to supporting the Philippine Government and its people in this time of great need," it said.
