DepEd to strongly push for the 'progressive expansion' of face-to-face classes

Following the “success” of the pilot run of limited face-to-face classes, the Department of Education (DepEd) was determined to recommend its continued implementation and expansion.

“Based on consolidated report, naging matagumpay yung ating pilot face-to-face (our pilot face-to-face was successful),” said Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan during the “Laging Handa” public briefing on Friday, Jan. 13.

“Nagkaroon tayo ng survey among our teachers, students, parents and on the various evaluation parameters, very favorable ang naging report (We conducted a survey among our teachers, students, parents and on the various evaluation parameters, the report was very favorable,” Malaluan said.

DepEd started the implementation of limited face-to-face classes in November and wrapped up the pilot study in December.

Malaluan said that DepEd is currently finalizing its report on the pilot implementation to be submitted to the Office of the President.

Malaluan said that based on the consolidated report on the pilot implementation of limited face-to-face classes, various areas were assessed which include student participation, health and safety satisfaction, teaching and learning aspect --- among others.

Based on the report, Malaluan said that the overall student attendance, the feeling of safety of participants, satisfaction with the implementation of safety and health protocol, and teaching and learning “were very positive.”

“The confidence to continue the implementation and to expand is very high also,” Malaluan said.

Meanwhile, Malaluan also recognized that there were also challenges reported by the students and teachers during the pilot run but many of these were already addressed at the local level.

“There will be refinements on certain aspects like putting up physical barriers and so on and addressing some challenges, but overall, we, at DepEd, can recommend and really strongly push for the progressive expansion of face-to-face classes,” Malaluan said.
