Random antigen tests for MRT passengers start; 6 positive for COVID

Six passengers of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) have tested positive for COVID-19 on the first day of the random antigen testing on volunteering train riders.

The MRT-3 started Tuesday, Jan. 11, the random swab testing of consenting passengers as part of efforts to monitor COVID-19 cases in the rail line amid the recent surge in Metro Manila.

MRT-3 Director for Operations Michael Capati said the management was able to test 48 passengers during the morning peak hours from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Of those who underwent antigen testing, Capati said six yielded positive results, while the remaining 42 tested negative.

According to the management, passengers who tested negative will get a free ride while those positive will be barred from riding the train and will be advised to isolate.

"Pinayuhan natin sila ng options nila at sinasabi natin na mag-isolate sila, mag-report po sa LGU (local government unit) nila and also option for possible confirmatory test sa RT-PCR (We advised them to isolate and report to their and also to undergo a confirmatory RT-PCR test)," Capati said.

The MRT-3 management earlier said that the random antigen testing of consenting and volunteering passengers is intended to "gauge the level of COVID-19 presence in the rail lines."

The antigen tests are being conducted for free at MRT-3's North Avenue, Cubao, Shaw Boulevard, and Taft Avenue stations from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

This will continue for the entire month, except weekends, the management added.

The rail line earlier conducted mandatory antigen testing among all of its personnel due to the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila which is currently under the more stringent Alert Level 3.

Aside from testing, additional train marshals were also deployed to optimize the enforcement of health protocols inside trains and in stations.
