Filipinos have a more pressing matter to attend to than Charter Change (Cha-cha).

Cabinet Secretary and Acting Presidential Spokesperson Karlo Nograles had this to say Tuesday, Jan. 11 in response to Pampanga 3rd district Rep. Aurelio "Dong" Gonzales's filing of Resolution of Both Houses (RBH) No. 7.
Gonzales, a Duterte administration ally and a former deputy speaker, wants to amend the term limits in the 1987 Constitution by giving the president a five-year term, with an opportunity at reelection for another five years.
Currently, a Philippine president can only serve for a single six-year term. The solon's Cha-cha proposal will also affect other elected officials' terms of office.
Stating the obvious, Nograles said there is simply no time for such measure to be discussed by the legislature.
"May paparating na eleksiyon sa May 2022 at sa palagay ko wala nang oras ang Kongreso sa panukalang ito (There's an upcoming elections in May 2022 and I think Congress doesn't have the time to discuss this proposal)," said Nograles, who is a former Committee on Appropriations chairman in the House of Representatives.
"At isa pa, mayroon tayong mas mabigat na laban–at ito po iyong laban against COVID-19 (Moreover, we have a more pressing battle--and that is the battle against COVID-19)," added the Palace official.
The Omicron variant of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has triggered a new surge in the country wherein fresh daily cases have reached over 33,000. Public discourse appear to be focused on whether or not Alert Level 4 should be raised in certain areas, like the National Capital Region (NCR).
Gonzales’s RBH No.7 urges the House and the Senate--the two chambers of Congress--to convene as a constituent assembly. He filed the measure at the tail end of the 18th Congress, when most of the lawmakers are gearing up for the conduct of the May 9, 2022 elections.
The campaign period for the aspirants of national positions, including the presidency and vice presidency, starts on Feb. 8.
