Korean actor O Yeong-su, 77, won best supporting actor on television at the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards held on Jan. 9 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

O Yeong-su won Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role on Television for his role in Netflix’s global hit Korean series “Squid Game.”

“Let’s hear it for O Yeong-su and his #GoldenGlobe for Best Supporting Actor — Television,” the Golden Globes announced on Twitter.

In “Squid Game,” O Yeong-su is player No. 001 Oh Il-nam who has a brain tumor. He is among the 456 players recruited to play deadly games in the drama, which became Netflix’s biggest show of all time. The players join the games for a prize of 45.6 billion won (about $38.5 million).

In winning his first Golden Globe award, O Yeong-su defeated Billy Crudup of “The Morning Show,” “Kieran Culkin of “Succession,” “Mark Duplass of “The Morning Show” and “Brett Goldstein of “Ted Lasso.”

“Squid Game” got nominated in three categories at the 2022 Golden Globes. Lee Jung-jae was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series-Drama.

The award went to Jeremy Strong from “Succession.” Other nominees were Brian Cox from “Succession,” Billy Porter from “Pose” and Omar Sy from “Lupin.”

“Squid Game” got nominated for Best Television Series-Drama, competing against “Lupin,” “The Morning Show,” “Pose” and “Succession.”

Lee Jung-jae, O Yeong-su and “Squid Game” director Hwang Dong-hyuk decided to boycott the Golden Globes to follow the decision of Netflix, which cut ties with the awards last May.

"As many know, Netflix did not submit the series to the Golden Globes. Also, considering the spread of COVID-19 and the mandatory quarantine regulations both in and out of the country, he has decided not to attend,” said Artist Company, Lee Jung-jae’s agency, about the actor’s decision not to attend the Golden Globes ceremony, the Korea Times reported.
